The 47-Hour Firearms Training Course is designed for armed security professionals in New York State who are seeking their initial firearms training certification. This comprehensive program meets all NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) requirements and provides participants with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to carry a firearm in the performance of their duties.
Overview
This intensive course combines 40 hours of classroom instruction with 7 hours of live-fire range training. Participants will learn about safe firearm handling, NYS laws and regulations, use-of-force guidelines, marksmanship fundamentals, and practical shooting exercises. Range time is focused on building proficiency, accuracy, and safety under the supervision of certified instructors.
Upon successful completion, students will receive the official NYS DCJS 47-Hour Firearms Training certificate, qualifying them to apply for armed guard status and to carry a firearm while working in a licensed security role.
What You'll Learn
During this 47-hour course, you will gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence required to safely carry and operate a firearm as an armed security professional in New York State. Topics include:
Firearm safety rules and safe handling procedures
New York State firearm laws and use-of-force regulations
Marksmanship fundamentals — stance, grip, sight alignment, and trigger control
Loading, unloading, and clearing malfunctions
Ammunition types and their proper use
Care, cleaning, and maintenance of your firearm
Live-fire training on the range under instructor supervision
Judgment and decision-making in armed security scenarios
By the end of the course, you will have the practical skills and legal knowledge to meet NYS DCJS requirements for armed guard certification.
State Requirement
To enroll in either course, students must possess:
A valid NYS pistol license (per Penal Law §400.00), and
A valid NYS security guard registration card.
